Background of the Study
Thrombocytopenia, a condition characterized by low platelet count, is a common complication among cancer patients, particularly those undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy (Olumide et al., 2023). The condition can lead to increased bleeding risk, requiring careful monitoring and management (Nduka et al., 2024). Nurses, as frontline caregivers, play an integral role in the identification, monitoring, and management of thrombocytopenia in cancer patients, ensuring timely intervention to prevent life-threatening complications (Adeyemi et al., 2023). At the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, nurses must be well-versed in thrombocytopenia's pathophysiology, risk factors, and appropriate management strategies, including platelet transfusion and administration of medications (Adebayo et al., 2024). However, gaps in knowledge and adherence to guidelines may exist, affecting patient outcomes. This study seeks to examine nurses’ knowledge of thrombocytopenia in cancer patients and their management practices at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
Statement of the Problem
Despite advancements in cancer treatment, thrombocytopenia remains a major challenge in managing cancer patients, especially those undergoing aggressive treatments like chemotherapy (Abiola et al., 2024). Nurses are critical in managing thrombocytopenia through early detection, proper monitoring, and treatment administration. However, at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, there is limited research on the adequacy of nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding thrombocytopenia management. This study aims to explore this gap and assess the factors influencing nurses’ ability to manage thrombocytopenia effectively.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in oncology and hematology units of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. A limitation of this study is the reliance on self-reported data, which may not fully reflect actual practices. The study will also not explore other healthcare professionals' roles in thrombocytopenia management.
